high efficiency of semantic models in EIA

In this guest post, Michael Schäfer, IT architect and Division Lead Multicloud & Modern Work at Netlution dives into how semantic knowledge models enable efficient data collection, organization, and utilization to drive business success, as well as important considerations when assessing the IT operating model for an EIA solution.

Efficient and high-performance operation of semantic models

Figures, data, facts - companies process huge amounts of information daily. This data harbors enormous potential that can be optimally exploited with a well-structured enterprise information architecture (EIA). Enterprise information architecture opens up new possibilities for collecting and organizing information efficiently.

How semantic models power the creation of digital twins

Semantic models are the key to optimizing enterprise architecture. Enriching data and metadata with context creates completely new perspectives: silos are overcome, data quality reaches a new level, and integration costs are significantly reduced. The resulting “digital twin” of the company combines all roles, processes and information into a living image. Semantic models make it possible for the first time to find holistic answers to complex, cross-departmental questions. The avoidance of data duplicates creates absolute clarity. This democratization of data opens up new insights for all areas.

The implementation of a solution for the creation and management of semantic models offers exciting development opportunities for companies. Modeling requires precision and expertise, especially when the goal is to support the integration of different data sources – a task for highly qualified teams where technical experts and domain specialists are supported by intuitive modeling tooling and can easily collaborate. This investment in expertise and tooling pays off several times over through optimum data quality and efficiency.

On-premise solution or SaaS model?

The enterprise digital twin opens up completely new business perspectives that can be optimally protected by a well-thought-out security concept. Modern technologies enable forward-looking rights and role management as well as reliable backup and recovery strategies. Integration into existing landscapes offers the opportunity to make optimum use of existing infrastructures. Flexible interfaces seamlessly connect semantic models with existing systems. The choice between cloud, on-premises or hybrid environments opens up maximum design freedom.

The decision between an on-premise solution and SaaS model offers several strategic options: In-house operation ensures maximum control and independence, while SaaS solutions impress with their cost efficiency, automatic updates and effortless scalability. This flexibility enables perfect adaptation to individual company requirements and is a result of a well-thought-out operating concept.

The existing skills in the IT department are often decisive for the successful technical implementation and smooth operation of a solution for semantic models. Companies considering an on-premise solution will have to ask themselves: “Do we already have in-house experience with graph databases, which are essential for processing such highly networked data?” And above all: “Does operating such a software solution on-premise align with our IT strategy?” In addition to training existing employees or hiring appropriate experts, such a decision also includes a comprehensive security concept for each component, its integration into IT service management, support training, and the expansion of the relevant internal processes to include the new technology stack – all time- and cost-intensive tasks requiring a high level of IT expertise.

Of course, the usual approaches to monitoring, alerting, backup, recovery, high availability, scaling, etc. also apply here – but stable and secure operation is hardly possible without more intensive consideration of the characteristics of the technology used (clusters or individual instances, CI/CD processes for the distribution of semantic models, etc.). Operation on a highly scalable infrastructure with Kubernetes is often recommended, but here too, the appropriate skills may first need to be built up in a company. A complete operating concept, including the definition of suitable KPIs and SLAs, can take several months and at the same time employees are tied to this specific application and this technology stack - an investment that should not be underestimated.

The hosted Enterprise Information Architecture solution

With its semantic modeling solution for EIA, metaphacts offers a sophisticated approach for building an enterprise digital twin. The solution IT architecture is tailored to integration in the corporate environment, namely in existing ITSM, SSO/authentication and other existing central services. Additionally, log files can be extracted and seamlessly integrated into existing processes and tools, while the actual operation in the cloud is carried out by a service partner. Both the SaaS model (highly standardized, but therefore also up-and-running in a very short time) or a managed service model (if desired, even on the customer’s own infrastructure) can be used.

As a specialized IT service provider, Netlution supports companies on their way to successfully using semantic models. Together with metaphacts, who provide the innovative semantic modeling solution, we offer you the right service that adapts perfectly to the individual requirements of companies – either as an on-premise solution or as a dynamic SaaS product on the AWS platform.

Netlution’s forward-looking security concept protects the enterprise digital twin with AI-supported log monitoring, DevSecOps practices and state-of-the-art encryption. We do not only enable secure cross-border data flows but also the continuous optimization of all security measures. Netlution takes the following topics into account in their holistic overall view: The network connection (VPN, DirectConnect, MPLS, etc.), the cloud-specific infrastructure platform of the respective provider (Azure AKS, AWS, ECS, EKS or Google GKE), the integration of monitoring and health, the setup of hyperscaler-specific backup, and recovery solutions and the integration of semantic models in CI/CD pipelines.

Our IT specialists combine expertise with innovative strength and flexibility. With their comprehensive know-how in the areas of infrastructure, container workload security and AWS security, they work together with our customers to design a forward-looking enterprise architecture and unlock the full potential of semantic models.
